Correlation between the visibility of submandibular fossa and mandibular canal cortication on panoramic radiographs and submandibular fossa depth on …
2017
Background To identify a correlation between the submandibular fossa (SF) visibility and mandibular canal (MC) cortication on panoramic image and the depth of SF measured on CBCT and also correlation between the depth of SF and vertical and horizontal location of MC on CBCT. Material and Methods 500 CBCT scans and panoramic radiographs were evaluated. SF depth types were classified as type I ( 3mm) on CBCT. Visibility of SF and the cortication of MC on panoramic radiographs were compared with the depth of SF on CBCT. Distances between MC and mandibular inferior, buccal and lingual cortices were measured. Results No statistically significant correlation was found between radiolucent appearan…
Dental pulp calcifications in prehistoric and historical skeletal remains
2020
Abstract Background The prevalence of hard tissue formations in the dental pulp varies considerably. Beside ageing processes and irritations of the dental pulp, etiological associations with cardiovascular disease and dietary habits have been discussed, which are of particular research interest. The aim of this pilot study is to provide new insights on structural and etiological factors involved in the development of pulp calcifications by investigating skeletal remains from different (pre)historic periods. Methods The jaws of 46 skeletons excavated in central Germany, were examined for the presence of pulp stones using digital volume tomography (DVT). A total of 1122 teeth were examined wi…

Factors related to the quantity of subgingival calculus in proximal root surfaces
1999
The aim of this study was to determine the association between the quantity of subgingival calculus and the following factors: type and severity of periodontal disease, age, gender and tobacco consumption. A sample of 622 periodontal patients was studied. The radiographically detectable subgingival calculus in proximal root surfaces was recorded in periapical radiographs, considering the number of surfaces without calculus and the number of surfaces exhibiting deposits equal or greater than I mm. The association between the subgingival calculus and the factors under study was analyzed by distinct non-parametric tests. A statistically significant association was found between the absence/pre…
Analyzing the teeth next to the alveolar cleft: Examination and treatment proposal prior to bone grafting based on three-dimensional versus two-dimen…
2016
Abstract Purpose The objective was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of three-dimensional (3D) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) on information about the cleft and alignment of cleft neighboring teeth. Materials and methods Panoramic X-rays, small-volume CBCTs, and study casts of 20 patients with a total of 22 alveolar clefts were analyzed prior to secondary bone grafting. Six maxillofacial surgeons and 6 orthodontists rated the following parameters: visibility of alveolar cleft expansion, position and probability of alignment of cleft neighbored teeth. Two-dimensional (2D) X-rays and casts were rated first; CBCT and casts followed at least 4 weeks later. Radiologic bone he…
HIV-related non-Hodgkin lymphomas affecting the oral cavity: a clinicopathologic study of 11 cases
2021
HIV-related non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the oral cavity are rare lesions with aggressive clinical behaviour. The aim of this study is to describe the clinicopathological features of a series of HIV-related oral non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Eleven cases of oral lymphomas affecting HIV-positive patients were retrieved from 2012 to 2019. Clinicopathological features regarding age, sex, tumour location, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, disease stage and follow-up were obtained. Histologic, immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization for EBV detection were done for diagnosis confirmation. Overall survival was estimated by Kaplan?Meier curve. Males predominated, with a mean age of 40.3 years-…
Analysis of 55 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in an Indian population and review of literature
2021
Background This study reviews the demographic, clinical and radiographic features of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor(AOT) diagnosed in an Indian population over 50 years and also evaluate and compare follicular AOT(F-AOT) and extra-follicular AOT(EF-AOT). Material and Methods 55 diagnosed cases of AOT from 1971-2020 were studied retrospectively. The data regarding the age, sex, location, variant of AOT, duration, clinical features, radiographic appearance, treatment and recurrence were collected and analysed. Results Of the 722 odontogenic tumors diagnosed, 7.6% were AOTs with higher prevalence of extra-follicular (67.3%) than follicular (32.7%) variant. All the tumors were intraosseous with …
Congenital pelvic skeletal anomalies: Clinical and radiographic evaluation of newborns with gastrointestinal malformation
2020
Abstract Background Congenital pelvic skeletal anomalies (CPSA) may appear as isolated defects or in association with other anomalies like congenital malformations of the digestive system (CMDS). Minor CPSA in non-syndromic patients are often overlooked. We aimed to assess the frequency of CPSA in newborns with CMDS to review the diagnostic approaches. Study design A retrospective review of medical records of 201 newborns who underwent X-rays for different neonatal indications was conducted. In 122 patients CMDS were diagnosed and classified according to the ICD-10 classification; 79 non-CMDS patients acted as controls. Pelvic skeletal segments were examined by X-rays. Results Patients with…
Assessment of periapical status : a comparative study using film-based periapical radiographs and digital panoramic images
2009
Aim: To compare the use of film-based periapical radiographs and digital panoramic images displayed on monitor and glossy paper in the assessment of the periapical status of the teeth. Methodology: A total of 86 subjects were examined. All participants underwent a full-mouth radiographic survey (14 periapical radiographs) and a digital panoramic radiography. The periapical status of all appraised teeth was assessed. Results: Periapical radiographs allowed the assessment of the periapical status of a significantly higher percentage of teeth (87.4%) Digital radiography had a significantly reduced potential to allow assessment of the periapical status (p<0.01). Only 58.0% and 34.3% of teeth co…
Intraoperative C-arm CT imaging in angular stable plate osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures
2013
The purpose of this study was to analyze the practicability and benefit of intraoperative C-arm computed tomography (CT) imaging in volar plate osteosynthesis of unstable distal radius fractures. During a 1 year period, intraoperative three dimensional (3D) imaging with the ARCADIS Orbic 3D was performed in addition to standard fluoroscopy in 51 cases. The volar angular stable plate oesteosyntheses were analyzed intraoperatively and, if necessary, improved immediately. The duration of the scan and radiation exposure dose were measured. On average, performance of the scan and analysis of the CT dataset took 6.7 minutes. In 31.3% of the surgeries a misplacement of screws was detected and cor…
